AbsoluteTighter accuracy and long range
Essential · Taylor 1478
It reads from 32 to 392 degrees F, within about 2 degrees. The silicone-coated wire runs out the oven door to a display with a magnet back. You set a target temperature and timer, and a persistent alarm sounds, audible even outdoors. Readings came slower than on other thermometers tested.
Pro: A wired probe that stays in the oven and alerts at your target temperature.
Con: Probe and wire handle only 392°F, so not for very hot grills or ovens.
Upgrade · ThermoWorks Chef
It reads from -58 to 572°F and comes factory calibrated to within 2 degrees, and it can be recalibrated. A 47-inch cable runs from the probe to a large backlit display with a tilting stand and a magnet. It has high and low alarms, four alarm volumes, a timer and min-max tracking.
Pro: A probe cable rated past 700°F, for grills and ovens too hot for the Essential.
Con: Settings take some learning, and it is splash-proof rather than fully waterproof.
Absolute · ThermoWorks Smoke
One wired probe reads the food and one the pit air, both on a backlit base. A wireless receiver shows temperatures up to 300 feet away, through walls and doors. High, low and target alarms are set on the base, and it reads within 1.8 degrees. App use needs a separate add-on.
Pro: Two probes rated to 700°F, for grills and ovens too hot for the Essential.
Con: The receiver's alarm is quiet, and the remote can lag behind the base.
